Build a School

Education is one of the most effective routes out of poverty. But a lack of resources in rural Ugandan schools has meant that many children miss out on it. Build Africa is working to improve the quality of primary education by providing facilities, equipment and teacher training in Ugandan primary schools. Last year, we helped more than 10,000 pupils. We also provide training for school committees and parent and teacher groups to help them run the school.

In many areas of Uganda young people struggle to survive from day to day. The capability to generate an income is vital. Build Africa is working in some of the neediest districts of Uganda to deliver life-changing business and vocational skills training required to generate income. Even when young people have chosen a particular vocation or business activity, most lack the initial capital required to launch that enterprise. By providing small loans with low interest rates to committed individuals Build Africa supports young people’s long-term aspirations.

HIV/AIDS & reproductive health
Although Uganda is sometimes cited as an HIV/AIDS success story, in reality the disease continues to destroy thousands of Ugandan families each year. Build Africa has been involved in a long-running project to increase awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS among young people, policy makers and communities. Build Africa seeks to integrate HIV/AIDS and reproductive health information into all its projects with young people.

Firewood scarcity is a big issue in Rakai District, where Build Africa works; over 99% of people in the project area depend on wood fuel for cooking. Uganda now has only 3% of its natural forest cover left. Increased demand for wood fuel by poor rural populations, who have no alternative sources of energy for cooking, is set to further diminish natural resources. Build Africa is helping rural communities protect the natural resources on which they depend.
